The ceremony was officiated by Ms. Ao Ieong U, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Mr. Zhang Xu, Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Luo Yong Gang, Vice Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., Ms. Wang Dong, Acting Commissioner, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr. Chan Chak Mo, Chairman of the IFTM Council, Mr. Francis Lui Yiu Tung, Vice-Chair of the IFTM Council, Dr. Fanny Vong, IFTM President, Mr. Armando Amante, President of the IFTM Alumni Association, and Student Representative Lao Hou Cheng. Representatives of government departments, colleges and universities, scholarship institutions and the industry, as well as faculty members, also attended this ceremony.

At the Opening Ceremony, Dr. Fanny Vong, IFTM President, said that thanks to the support from all sectors of society, the IFTM has made great achievements in the field of higher education with its education quality receiving much international recognition. The IFTM has grown in scale, offered more programmes and improved the level of schooling by including postgraduate and doctoral programmes in 2019, making for a comprehensive higher education institution.

In her speech, Dr. Fanny Vong also noted that in recent years, the IFTM has been continuously optimising its learning environment, including adding the Taipa campus to enrich its overall facilities. 2020 marks the 25th anniversary, also the silver jubilee, of the IFTM. Early this year, the Macao SAR Government approved the allocation to the IFTM of the Silver Jubilee Building on the old campus of the University of Macau, as a teaching building on the IFTM’s Taipa Campus. After basic maintenance and renovations, two floors of the Silver Jubilee Building have been put into use to provide more teaching space for the IFTM. In addition to the Silver Jubilee Building, the IFTM has also been allocated a lot on the old campus of the University of Macau as a land reserve for future development to further enhance its hardware facilities. On this new lot, the IFTM is planning to build an “International Tourism Education Complex”, which is expected to become a landmark school building, adding facilities that the IFTM currently lacks or finds inadequate, such as simulated teaching sites, study rooms, cultural and art exhibitions facilities, space for leisure activities, comprehensive administrative buildings, etc. These will help improve the IFTM’s teaching quality and nurture more professionals for the tourism industry.

In addition, at the ceremony, the alumni representative Teresa Lao Kit U and student representative Shown Lei San Lam expressed their good wishes for the 25th anniversary celebration of the IFTM. They sincerely thanked the IFTM for always being committed to providing students with quality higher education in tourism, and opportunities and platforms to broaden their horizons and achieve a wonderful life.
