The course examines and analyses concepts applying to the planning and development of tourist destinations and products. It presents examples through case studies and literature obtained from a variety of primary and secondary sources. It introduces students to theories and concepts of tourism planning and development. It also gives students an appreciation for why planning is necessary before developing tourism at a site or destination. Students will gain a clear understanding of the positive and negative impacts of tourism development and how planning can mitigate the potential problems brought by tourists, maximize the benefits, and prepare for a sustainable future for a tourism destination. Students will be made aware of conventional and alternative forms of tourism development and the importance of sustainability in tourism development.
