IFT Community Value

Each time someone asks me what it’s like living here in Macao and working at the IFT, my response is immediate:  “Every year gets better and better!”  That’s not the voice of an optimist; it’s simple pragmatics. 

How could I not be both comfortable and entertained, living in a place where people are so casual?  Macao is quaint and personal.  Neighbours share brief conversations with me while going down our lift, as they run an errand to the local shop – wearing their pajamas!  When I sit down to lunch, my colleagues speak to me about places all around our globe where they have lived and worked.  I can’t stop myself from asking them questions about the unique wonders that await us at those locations! 

I smile when students share stories of their past; then I see them recognise that there has been hidden value within those stories which they, to date, had not investigated.   This process of discovery within education brings out the best in all of us. 

Here at the IFT a true and cohesive community exists:  its sense of friendly welcome, coupled with the drive to pursue and ensure high professional training standards, draws good to good.  Where other institutions might falter in creative expression and alternative voice after rapid expansion, IFT has held to its family atmosphere in the hallways and close team cooperation within business meetings.  Facing new challenges?  Yes, part of progress.  Better and better?  Absolutely!  Happy 15th Anniversary to our IFT community!

Interview
IFT Brings New Master’s Programme to Macao

IFT President, Dr. Fanny Vong, has led the IFT team since November 2001.  Believing in inclusiveness, her leadership efforts and example have resulted in a cohesive team relationship within meetings and a community relationship among all staff on campus.  Herein, she reflects on these first 15 years of IFT’s reputation and delivery of its product.

TW: Do you feel that IFT’s image has changed over the years?  If so, how or in what manner?

FV: IFT has become more international and well-known in the region, thanks to the good performance of our graduates and the quality of our programmes.  There have been great changes in terms of numbers, quality and programme level.  Numbers: IFT began with an annual intake of 60 undergraduate and trained-up some 500 professionals in its early years.  The numbers then increased along with the rapid growth of Macao’s tourism industry.  We now have an annual intake of over 400 undergraduates and currently an undergraduate student body of 1300. For professional training, we have an annual average of 12,000 participants.  Quality: over the years, IFT’s programmes and education quality have been recognised by international organisations, universities in the Mainland and other countries, as well as by the industry.  This is evidenced by the awards we received, and most notably, the Medal of Merit for Tourism awarded by the Macao SAR Government in 2008.  Programme Level: we used to offer only professional training and bachelor degrees.  Starting from this academic year, we move into postgraduate studies.  The first programme is the UNLV Executive Masters Programme.  The University of Nevada Las Vegas sends their professors to Macao regularly for teaching.

TW: With the influx of US-based and Australian-based casino/resort interests, has the focus of the mission statement of IFT which includes “European” been altered?

FV: Macao has become more international.  International means not only European.  Hence, we are expanding our reference base to learn from leading education models and programmes around the world.  The search for excellence brings us to cooperation with fine institutions in the Mainland as well as elsewhere in Asia, North America and Europe.

TW: How has the introduction (by other institutions in Macao) of courses in Tourism and Hospitality negatively and/or positively affected IFT?

FV: IFT will strive to maintain our position as the leading provider in quality programmes in the fields of tourism and services.  We have expanded our scope from “tourism” and “hospitality” to cover also heritage, events, retail, marketing, recreation and leisure, culinary, and culture and creative studies.  We will continue to keep abreast of new trends and needs in the Macao community and industry, and provide education and training solutions, as well as supply qualified manpower.  We will also continue to engage in research to inform the public and authorities of new issues in the tourism development of Macao.

TW: What good effects as well as challenges come from the addition of graduate programmes at IFT? 

FV: The addition raises the profile and international recognition of IFT.  The fact that UNLV chose to partner with IFT speaks volumes for their trust in our quality and commitment to serve Macao’s tourism industry.  The addition also provides Macao people a good choice of further studies if they hope to build a career in the service sector.  Challenges: the participants have to be prepared for a tough learning journey which requires high personal commitment, discipline and perseverance to complete their studies.

TW: What changes in administrative structure have you seen; what changes do you anticipate in the future?

FV: We have seen a steady growth in the number of staff.  This all reflects the expansion of the Institute’s programmes and community involvement.  In the near future, IFT will still be in an expansion mode but we are always cautious with the rate we are growing to ensure quality and uniqueness is not lost along the way.

TW: What do you consider important milestones for IFT within its history?

FV: I would say: “Every time we received an award.  Every time we were invited to participate in the executive committees of international organisations such as UNWTO, PATA, and UNESCO Asian Academy of Heritage Management.  Every new degree programme we launched.  Every new professional qualifications programme we brought to Macao!”

TW: What is being done now that you consider essential for additional success stories for our IFT?

FV: We continue to keep our quality standards up, in both programmes and student/graduate performance.

TW: What sort of IFT expansion can we expect and how soon?

FV: The most important thing we need now is a larger campus.  Only with more space can we design and launch more new programmes that answer new needs of Macao, e.g. the development of cultural and creative industries.

CNI-IFT Advanced Certification in Strategic Hospitality Management

The tourism industry of Macao has been developing rapidly in recent years. With the hotel sector being one of the key elements of this development, management teams within the hotel industry must equip themselves with strategic thinking and advance vision.  With such industry needs in mind, IFT and Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management (CNI) co-organised the “CNI-IFT Advanced Certification in Strategic Hospitality Management” with the aim to provide industry executives an all-round training in Strategic Hospitality Management.  The certification programme consists of four modules offered in 2010 and 2011.

Module two “Strategic Hospitality Marketing Executive Development Programme” was delivered on 22 and 23 July in Macao.  It exposed participants to innovative, practical and profitable approaches to addressing key strategic hospitality marketing challenges.  Participants learned the latest applications of strategic thinking and analysis in hospitality marketing; from upstream marketing, strategic analysis to value innovation, managing brand equity and marketing metrics.

IFT gladly invited Prof. Gerard Gonzales, Adjunct Associate Professor, Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management to be the speaker.  He has accumulated 30 years of international hotel and resort management experience as a general manager, financial controller, consultant, administrator and internal auditor with various hotels, resorts and restaurant organisations in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and the USA.  As principal consultant of Gonzales & Associates, he consults for several independent and chain hospitality organisations in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, France and the United Kingdom in the areas of strategic planning and marketing, asset management, organisational development and customer value management.

More than twenty trade professionals and top executives from hotel and tourism entities have attended the programme.

PATA Travel Mart 2010 Seminar

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), Hong Kong Polytechnic University and IFT jointly organised the PATA Travel Mart 2010 Seminar on “Human Resources Challenges in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry: Promoting Industry and Academia Collaboration” at IFT on 14 September.  This full-day seminar was one of the activities on the PATA Travel Mart programme that took place in Macao for the first time from 14 to 17 September.

The seminar was hosted by PATA CEO, Mr. Greg Duffel, PATA Education and Training Committee Chairman, Professor Kaye Chon and IFT President, Dr. Fanny Vong.  During the seminar, scholars, industry practitioners and students engaged in productive discussions on the following four topics:

Career Planning for Hospitality and Tourism Industry: Advice to Students

  1. Is There a Gap in Expectations between Educational Institutions and Industry? What Can We Do to Narrow the Gap?

  3. Current Issues in HR Challenges and Potential Solutions
The goal of this event was to provide a forum that will help bridge the potential gap that exists between academia and the tourism industry by suggesting innovative and unique perspectives on the issues and constraints of the supply and demand of qualified employees in the travel and tourism industry.  At the same time the event created an occasion for students and the new PATA generation to interact with industry leaders in the region.

16th APTA Conference at IFT

From 13 to 16 July, Macao welcomed a distinguished delegation who attended the 16th Asia Pacific Tourism Association (APTA) Annual Conference at IFT.

APTA is an internationally acclaimed association in the field of tourism, which is comprised of 17 Asia Pacific countries and regions.  Its goals are to further facilitate quality tourism research, especially in the Asia-Pacific area, to share research achievements and to exchange ideas between academics and their counterparts in the business world.  The APTA conference has been held annually and their journal is published quarterly.  APTAs quality research papers are distributed globally.
This year’s conference was themed “Competition and Collaboration between Regional Tourism Destinations” and attracted hospitality scholars, researchers and practitioners from the region to present their papers in Macao.  The opening ceremony was hosted by Dr. Sang Taek Lim, Chairman of APTA and Dr. Fanny Vong, President of IFT.  We were delighted to be able to have the following guests of honour in attendance:
  • Dr. Dai Bin, Vice Director, China Tourism Academy
  • Mr. Kwon Ping Ho, Executive Chairman, Banyan Tree Holdings
  • Ms. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Acting Director of the Macau Government Tourist Office
  • Prof. Kaye Chon, Chair Professor and Director of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Two hundred and twenty delegates from twenty countries and regions attended this conference.

亞太觀光學會於7月13 - 16日在學院舉籌辦了2010年度研討會,主題為「區域旅遊目的地之間的競爭與合作」,二百多位來自二十個國家及地區的學者出席了會議,並將個人的學識拼湊成大會的集體智慧。學院藉此忠心感謝亞太觀光學會,特別會後捐出一千美元作為本學院學生獎學金之用。

2008/09 Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programme Graduates’ Employment Survey

In order to find out the career placement of our bachelor as well as diploma and certificate programme graduates of 2008/09, IFT launched a survey from January to February 2010.  In this survey, graduates were asked to complete a questionnaire which aimed at finding out their latest employment situation.

Bachelor Programmes
For Bachelor graduates, the overall response rate was 57%. According to the results of the survey, 90.8% got employment.  They all had full-time employment with monthly median salary of MOP10,480.  The employment sectors are displayed in the figure below.

Diploma and Certificate Programmes
For diploma and certificate graduates, the overall response rate was 99%. According to the results of the survey, 57% of the respondents were employed and the rest were studying only or in job search.  The employment sectors are displayed in the figure below.  The majority of graduates had full-time employment and earned a monthly median salary range of MOP9,385.

Portugal's Finest Vineyards


David Wong had a fascinating wine trip at Portugal

I headed to Portugal on behalf of IFT as part of the Chief Executive’s first official visit to Lisbon together with the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO).  We hosted two “Macanese Food Promotion” events, featuring traditional Macanese favourites such as Chillicotes (Deep fried pork pies), Minchi (Minced beef, pork, or both) and African Chicken.

After Lisbon, I headed to Alentejo, to visit David Baverstock, an Australian winemaker for Esporão.  Esporão is a 600 ha estate in the Alentejo with modern cellars built in 1987.  Impressively in 1995, they built a dam with 4.000.000 M3 capacity, feeding a drip irrigation system that covers the entire vineyard.  David is also the consultant winemaker for Sir Cliff Richard and his wines in the Algarve.

Portugal has more indigenous grape varieties than any other country in the world, over 400 varieties at last count.  The Monocastas or single variety grape were excellent, much improved from previous years with the added benefit of longer ageing in new French oak.

Next morning, I caught the train to Vila Nova de Gaia, to visit the five leading Douro estates including Quinta do Vale Meão, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta Vale Dona Maria, Quinta do Vallado and Niepoort Vinhos (Nápoles).  All five wineries are producing probably the best wines in Portugal at this time. 

Arriving at Oporto, I was warmly greeted by Francisco Vito Javier de Olazabal, owner of Quinta do Vale Meão, an ambassador for Douro and a wine legend.  Vito Olazabal is the great-grandson of Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, the grand dame of the 19th century Douro valley and is married to Zinha, the daughter of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the co-maker of the legendary Barca Velha.  His son, also known as Francisco or Xito, is not only the winemaker for Vale Meão, but also for Vallado.  Chairman of the A.A. Ferreira Port wine company for 30 years, over 70 years of age and still going strong, his 2004 Quinta do Vale Meão is rated by Wine Spectator magazine at 97 points, the highest rated Portuguese table wine ever!

The same evening, I traveled to Quinta do Vallado.  The winery has five wonderful guest rooms, all of which overlook the Corgo River from steep terraces.  The tour and tasting was conducted by João Ferreira Álvares Ribeiro, a generous, warm hearted and smart operator.  With Wine Spectator giving his current 2007 Reserva 96 points, his highest points to date, he is very much part of the new Douro.

After Vallado, Vale Dona Maria was the next stop where Cristiano van Zeller, is the onetime owner of Quinta do Noval, the famous Port house.  If prices reflect the quality of wine, then Quinta Do Noval Nacional has no equal in Portugal as prices are ridiculously expensive.  The average price, if you can find it, is over USD1,200 for a bottle.  The wines that will go into either the Quinta Vale D. Maria or the amazing CV wine are all made from grapes that have been foot trodden in traditional lagares, as is the way in Douro, and spend 9-18 months in French oak casks before they are bottled unfiltered.

Later, at Quinta do Crasto, I met Miguel Roquette.  The view from this beautiful estate is breathtaking with quaint guest rooms, old winemaking equipment decorating the gardens, plum, peach and olive trees all around, a large traditional basket press, old vines and the piece de la resistance - the infinity pool to beat all infinity pools.

The Reserva is an exceptional blend of up to 25-30 regional grape varieties, all made from old vines with the 2005 vintage scoring 95 points and rated the number three wine of Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2008, which is very impressive for a Portuguese wine.  

Their top two wines must be the Vinha Maria Teresa and the Vinha Da Ponte, and let’s not forget the joint venture with Jean-Michel Cazes of Chateau Lynch Bages for the elegant wine called Xisto, referring to the schist soil that makes up most of the Douro Valley.  

Next morning, we headed for Quinta de Napoles, home of Dirt Niepoort and his famous Port and table wines.  Dirt makes the full range of Port wines, but one speciality is a garrafeiras style of Port.  These ports are from a single year and are aged in special glass containers called “demijohns”.  

Then I went to Vila Nova de Gaia to see Adrian Bridge at Taylor’s wine lodges.  Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman is one of Oporto’s oldest and most famous Port wine companies, still a family firm with Fonseca and Croft being represented in the company’s impressive portfolio.  Taylor’s was the first Port house to create the white dry port, the Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) and the mechanical “lagares.”  David Guimaraens is the company’s talented winemaker.  Adrian was busy directing operations for his new hotel venture, The Yeatman, which is soon to be opened. This luxury 5-star wine hotel will have 82 rooms and a wine spa.

Professional and Continuing Education School
Training Programme for Professionals from Yanling Hotel, Guangzhou

As a tourism and hospitality educational institute, IFT has been engaged in fostering professionals for all areas of the tourism industry.  In recent years, we have been organising training programmes for professionals from different corners of the world, with an aim to enhance cooperative relationships and fulfill students’ complex learning requirements.  This summer, a group of eight management team members from Guangzhou Yanling Hotel came to IFT to participate in a four-day intensive training programme.  The tailor-made programme consisted of three parts; western culinary arts, along with wine studies and skills for management and up-selling.  All participants reflected that they benefited enormously from the programme and hoped that the same learning opportunity will be provided to their colleagues in the near future.

Le Cordon Bleu Master Chef Week at IFT

Since a very good response had been received last year, Le Cordon Bleu Master Chef Week was organised again this summer at IFT.  The Macao Culinary Academy at IFT honourably invited Chef Philippe Guiet, Technical Director and Cuisine Instructor of Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa Culinary Arts Institute, to host the event.  Similar to last year, the Master Chef Week started with purchasing fresh products from local markets, demonstrating how genuine French cuisine can also be prepared with raw materials available in Macao.

“Getting to know what ingredients or the right amount of seasoning to be used will never be a problem as there are bundles of cookbooks that can provide you the answer.  But to cook well, what you need is the proper technique.  And that is why I am here, to show you the know-how.” said Chef Guiet.

The concept of fusion Thai cuisine added another sparkle to the event.  Chef Guiet demonstrated how ingredients and cooking techniques from the two totally different cultures could be combined to create seamless and fresh dishes.  “I have never imagined that French and Thai cuisine can be blended so well,” yielded one of the participants when she tasted her own dish as prepared under the instruction of Chef Guiet.  Our individual kitchen was filled with joy and astonishment when the event came to an end.

Macao Occupational Skills Recognition System (MORS) launch in Zhuhai

MORS, a standard representing the occupational proficiency of the local industry, has been attracting eager attention from the neighbouring region in recent years.  A memorandum of agreement was consequently signed between Zhuhai No. 1 Vocational School and IFT last year right after the visit paid by Mr. Gan Chaowei, the principal of Zhuhai No. 1 Vocational School.  Teachers from the two institutions have met several times afterwards to share teaching experiences and hold further discussions exploring details about the training process.

Currently, eight MORS entry level professional skills have been introduced to the School.  In the first half of this year, 143 students from the School joined the training programme.  Satisfactory results were received in the first batch of practical assessment, and another round will be held at the end of this year.

Western Culinary Arts Practicum Programme

11 well-established partner hotels signed protocol with IFT for training young chefs

For young would-be chefs, what can be better than gaining hands-on experience and being able to familiarise with the actual work environment?  The answer to this question may probably be the Western Culinary Arts Practicum Programme offered by IFT and 11 well-established participating partner hotels.  This 18-month programme, aiming to help youngsters take the first step toward their exciting culinary career, is carefully designed to cover all the theories and knowledge of proper techniques and to provide opportunities to gain on-the-job experience at the same time.  This year, the programme has attracted about 140 applicants.  However, due to the class capacity, only 26 of them could join the current batch of students.  The intake will be launched again next summer.  If you have a dream to become a great chef one day, please stay tuned with us for the announcement.

Second in the Macao Cultural Tourism Series, Temples of Macao

If churches are the solidification of the occidental value, then temples must be the concentration of the oriental culture.  They carry the cultural memory of different religions, different faiths and different modes of prospection.  These differences have never been in conflict, but have embraced one another harmoniously in our city for over 400 years.  Roaming around the city, one can appreciate the beauty of European churches and feel the folk culture of Chinese temples at the same time.  These two arts are significant and therefore, worthy of our attention. 

Following the publication of Churches of Macao, the second book in the Macao Cultural Tourism Series - Temples of Macao - was launched by Pearson in August.  The author of the book, IFT’s Chris Sam, hopes that through this book, the abundant sites of historical and cultural significance of Macao temples can be introduced to local residents as well as the wider readership (who are interested in the culture and history of Macao).  The book is now available at our library and can be purchased through Pousada de Mong-Há and amazon.com.

A Collaboration between IFT and the Macao Federation of Trade Unions


A press conference was hosted to further elaborate details of the programme

With the continuous increase in international investment from English-speaking countries represented in Macao since the liberalisation of the gaming industry, the prevalence of English language in our city has been increasing.  In order to cope with the rising need for English in all areas of business, IFT and the Macao Federation of Trade Unions jointly offer three one-year English certificate programmes.  Each certificate includes six courses and tutorial sessions for exams, designed for students with different English proficiencies and with different career goals.  Upon completion of each course, students will be eligible to take internationally recognised exams: London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Spoken English for Tourism (SEFT) and LCCI English for Business (EFB).  We hope that through offering these programmes the language proficiency of more people will be enhanced.

Student of Heritage Management Presents Paper at mAAN*Y 2010 Singapore Conference

I was very happy to present my essay “Public Participation on Heritage Conservation in Macao: the Role of Non-government Organisation at the Modern Asian Architecture Network (mAAN) Conference mAAN*Y 2010 Singapore Conference “Empowering Modern Asian City Makers” held on 2-4 August.  The aim of the conference was to empower young architects and youth from other disciplines to make a difference in cities.  My essay focuses on evaluating the current condition of public participation in Macao, and highlights the issue of local residents’ perception of public participation.

It was a pleasant opportunity for me to present my findings at an international conference and to listen to the opinions and comments from experts for further improvements.  Some audience showed interest in my paper, and we shared our opinions after the presentation.  Besides, I was invited to attend seminars with similar themes and to meet new friends from universities in Indonesia, Singapore and elsewhere.  This has helped me to start constructing a network of peers and professionals in South East Asia.  I even received personal invitations to visit them if I travel to their countries.

I would like to express my deepest appreciation to IFT, which sponsored part of my travelling expenses.  Also, I am heartily thankful to my professor, Dr. Sharif Shams Imon, whose guidance and support from the initial to the final stage enabled me to finish my first academic essay.  Besides, I have to thank Dr. Johannes Widodo, our visiting professor from Singapore, who encouraged me to submit my paper to the conference committee.  Lastly, I am grateful to all who supported me during the completion of my paper.

Participating in Action Oasis Activities

IFT has always supported charity events enthusiastically.  This year, IFT has raised appreciable funds for “Action Oasis” - organised by the Chinese Educators Association of Macau to help poor students in Mainland China further their studies.

The first activity, “One Person, One Red Packet” was during Chinese New Year, this was also an environmental friendly activity because all the red packet packs were recycled or reused after the activity.

The second event, “Macao Idol Charity Gala Dinner” held in May, was entirely planned, organised and executed by Hotel Year 2 students.  Through the wine auction and entrance fees, the dinner raised MOP182,854.50 for Action Oasis.  Not only did the Gala Dinner provide learning opportunities for students in Mainland China, but also for the Hotel sophomores.

The third one was a trip to Shanxi and Beijing between 14 and 20 July, which was organised by the Chinese Educators Association of Macau.  IFT sent representatives to deliver donations personally to students in need. The satisfied smiles of the benefiting students will be the motivating power for IFT to continue to hold such charity events in the future.

Exchange Programme
New Mainland and International Exchange Students for Fall 2010/11

IFT has welcomed 51 new mainland students along with 34 international exchange students this semester.  They journeyed to Macao from Mainland China, Chinese Taiwan, Hong Kong, Austria, Brazil, Finland, Japan, Kyrgyz Republic, Portugal, South Korea, Sweden, The Netherlands and the United States of America.

To facilitate a smooth integration between their studies at IFT and their life in Macao, a Welcoming Programme Week was held from late August to early September. Fun activities like International Challenge Day, culinary demonstrations and city tours were arranged.

Staff Well-being Programme
Health Seminar for IFT Staff and Students

The Health Seminar on Body Composition Analysis was successfully held on 13 August by IFT’s Occupational Safety & Health and Green Committee.  The purpose of this event was to enable staff and students to better understand the state of their health.  Over 100 staff and students joined the test and around 50 staff and students attended the seminar.

We are very grateful to Ms. Joyce Leong (Sports Instructor of CEDP) and Ms. Leong Cheng Man (Nurse of OSH Department, Macao Labour Affairs Bureau) for conducting the health seminar on Body Composition Analysis interpretation, introduction to weight control and muscle training exercises, understanding of common urban diseases and healthy diet recommendations.  Participants of this seminar included administrative staff, faculty members and students.

為了令員工及學生更了解自已的健康狀況,學院職業安全健康及環保委員會於8月為員工及學生進行人體成分分析,隨後舉行InBody人體成分分析講座,超過100名員工和學生參加了測試,當中約50人出席是次講座。講座內容包括人體成份分析報告解說、介紹有關體重控制及肌肉鍛鍊運動、均衡飲食及常見的都市病等。

Welcome
We are pleased to introduce our new faculty members who are joining IFT this academic year 2010/11.
Catherine LI Zhuo joins us as an Invited Instructor in Retail Studies.  Catherine received her Master of International Fashion Marketing & Globalization from Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom.  Prior to joining IFT, Catherine held various supervisory positions at UK-based multinational organisations in Account Management, Retail Merchandising and Supply Chain Management.
Fiona YANG Xi joins us as a Lecturer teaching Quantitative Analysis in a Service Sector and Economics.  She obtained her terminal degree in Supply Chain Management from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  In addition, she obtained the bachelor degree in Probability and Statistics at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University.  Her research interest includes supply chain management, with a focus on contract design under asymmetric information.  Fiona has also participated in research projects funded by the Shenzhen Government, focusing on indigenous innovation and technology standard competition.
Joey SOU Pek U joins us as an Instructor in Finance and Economics.  She received her Master in Economics from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.  She has been teaching the subjects of economics, statistics and finance at tertiary level.  Before joining IFT, she participated in the research project ‘’Macroeconometric Model of Macao’’ which aims at forecasting the economic growth of different sectors in Macao.  By integrating the economic concepts and quantitative skills to tourism, Joey develops her research field in industrial economics and tourism policy.
Marieta WONG joins us a Food and Beverage Instructor.  Being in love with food, Marieta entered the food world by obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Culinary Art and Food Service Management at Utah State University.  After that she worked as a pastry cook in various restaurants and hotels in USA and Hong Kong.  Later she completed the Master of Science in Hotel and Tourism Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  In order to explore more of the business world, she picked up a marketing position in a leading magazine company in Hong Kong. Marieta believes food can be tied to every sector of the business and tourism world, and it has no boundaries for development.
Michelle GALWISKY-ESPIQUE joins us as an English Instructor.  She has completed her Masters Degree in Teaching English at the University of the Cordilleras, Philippines and her Bachelor of Arts Degree Major in English at Saint Louis University.  She has been teaching English Courses since 1999.  Prior to joining IFT, she had served as an instructor in various institutions such as the Philippine Military Academy, University of the Cordilleras, University of Baguio, Hou Kong Middle School, and the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific.  She specialises in teaching communicative grammar and English for Specific Purposes to ESL students.  She has also been a reviewer for TOEFL and IELTS examinations for KAPLAN.
Philip CHAN King Lok joins us as a Lecturer in Heritage and Tourism Management.  He received his Master of Science from The University of Hong Kong and his Master of Social Science from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  Prior to joining IFT, he taught full-time tourism courses in Hong Kong for five years.  He also gained his tourism industrial experiences from varied sectors including airlines, hotel and tour operator during his early career years.  His interests lie with visitor management at heritage attractions, conservation issues of historic buildings and cultural tourism potential.
Ryan WAI Hung Kei joins us as an Instructor specialising in Hotel Housekeeping Operation.  Ryan received his Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2002.  Prior to joining IFT, he held various supervisory & managerial positions at several international hotels in their housekeeping sectors.  Ryan enjoys sharing his solid experiences for those engaged to be a hotelier.
Sherry TAN Xiu Chang joins us as an Invited Instructor specialising in the Event Management.  Sherry holds a Master Degree in Business Administration from the University of Montreal, Canada and B.A. from South China Normal University, China.  Prior to joining IFT, Sherry had worked in the MICE industry for years and got rich experiences in organising events ranging from exhibitions and  conferences to seminars and special events.
Takashi SUDA joins us as a Japanese Instructor.  He received his Bachelor Degree of Science in Physics from Niigata University, and Master of Arts Degree in English Literature from Niigata University after studying at the University of Birmingham for one year.  He taught English in a private high school in Japan before he came to Macao.
Virginia LAU Meng Chan joins us as Instructor in Accounting and Financial Management.  Virginia received her Master of Business Administration from Santa Clara University, California, USA and she is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with AICPA.  Virginia has years of experience in public and private accounting areas across the United States, Hong Kong and China.
Yolanda PUN Oi Ian joins us as a Japanese Instructor.  Yolanda was born in Macao, and lived in Japan for more than 16 years.  After completion of her degree at Wako University, Tokyo, Japan, she worked in Japan for several years, where she gained valuable experience and cultural insights with her Japanese and Chinese co-workers.  Since 2008, Yolanda has been devoted to teaching Japanese language courses at IFT.  She is also a graphics designer and is currently engaged in obtaining a Master's degree in Education.  Yolanda traveled around the world during a year-long period that allowed her to understand the virtues of learning different languages.
