President's message

Macao – on becoming a global destination

The recent talks about Pearl River Delta (PRD) regional integration have shifted from theoretical discussions to pragmatic operations and collaborative projects between governments related to health, food and water supply, education, transportation and tourism. Regional infrastructure development, such as the HK-Macau-Zhuhai bridge, the Guangzhou-Zhuhai light rail, and Macao’s own mass transit system - as well as the development of Hengqin Island - are all moving full steam ahead. It is not difficult to imagine that within a few years, Macao’s spatial qualities and residents’ sense of place will undergo phenomenal change. Local residents have to start thinking “big” and “regional”, if not “global”. We are no longer confined to work and live in the same territory. With the strong economic growth of the Mainland and the vast opportunities now available to us (through closer, seamless road and cyber connections), there will come a day when work and home addresses could be miles apart, yet a station or a click away. Same thing with tourists - we will be able to offer a more attractive and enriched experience package to them, making use of local and regional tourism resources. By capitalising on each city’s strengths, the Pearl River Delta region will be able to create a destination brand and visitor experience that appeals to the global tourism market.

In response to this trend, IFT has stepped up efforts to engage in collaboration with PRD educational institutions. We have introduced the Macao Occupational skills Recognition System (MORS) to Zhuhai No. 1 Vocational School, expecting the first batch of Zhuhai students to get certified this year. We are also in collaboration with Sun Yat-sen University in research and academic programmes. Worth mentioning are the many internship and exchange opportunities that our students have in the PRD and around the world -  developing future leaders with a global mindset for Macao’s tourism industry.

Interview
Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, MGTO Deputy Director,
on Macao in a global market

Having joined MGTO in 1988, after leaving a comfortable position in a bank, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes has advanced to her current Deputy Director position.  She’s been a part of expansion and redirection of MGTO, heavily involved in its global marketing of Macao as a destination.  Her sense of propriety and enthusiasm about Macao is quite stimulating!

T:  As you’ve been distributing information, and marketing Macao, what is the value that Macao has to offer?

H:  Long before UNESCO announced, “Yes, this is a recognised world heritage site” - even before that - we promoted Macao’s heritage and culture.  After all, it’s not just static buildings and squares.  It’s really the whole ambience; it’s the people of Macao; people are friendly here. We always say it’s a very tolerant place to live in.  Everybody respects each other. It’s a kind of southern European and southern Chinese laid-back atmosphere.

T:  How do you go between tolerance and laid-back in image presentation?

H:  It’s actually a harmonious blend. Somehow or other the chemistry of the place just works out that way. We’re developing at a very fast speed, but obviously it’s a small place after all.  In many respects we haven’t lost that laid back kind of culture. People here tend to say I’m satisfied with my life; so, that’s it.  I want to spend time with my family.  It’s still that kind of close-knit society. 

T:  Can you describe any successes in the marketing of Macao?

H:  It’s really not one success; it’s accumulated over many years.  One success story might be immediately after SARS; obviously tourism was very hard hit at that time.  At one point, hotel occupancies were as low as 20-30%.  So, it was really bad.  We pulled out a campaign called, “Macao welcomes you in summer.”  For two months a lot of different kinds of tactics were deployed:   free return journey jetfoil tickets; the “Macao welcomes you passport” with lucky draws for lots of prizes.  I think we gave out eight Mercedes Benzes in two months!  Plus Rolex watches and gold bars!  So it really created a great impact, and tourism was back to normal in a very short span of time.  That was a very strenuous campaign because the difficulty was you’d never know exactly when the travel warning on SARS would be lifted by WHO. 
The whole tourism industry came together and we had different media partners who were very flexible with scheduling.  The results were very good.  At the end of 2003, even with SARS hitting us so strongly, we were able to maintain a 3% increase year-on-year, which wasn’t very easy at that time.  It took out the “doom and gloom” of the entire industry.  That’s very important because you need to keep up the morale of the industry and keep people positive. 

T:  In your view, has MGTO’s position over the years been promoting infrastructure expansion or responding to it?

H:  I think we’re more responding to it.  Private sector investment is very much market driven.  In certain instances you might say that we’re promoting it because we’re the ones bringing more people in; and because of that, the environment allows people to think about new products and new investments. 

T:  What have you seen as a challenging market globally?

H:  Obviously, Macao doesn’t have a lot of air connections.  So for a lot of markets in terms of access into Macao – there would be difficulties.  So we need to work a lot with Hong Kong; we’re also now working with Guangdong province because of the airport and access to the area.
We foresee markets like Russia and the Arabian markets – new and up-and-coming would be quite challenging for us.  Tour guide language capabilities – that’s one.  The way of living, dietary concerns, all that needs to be taken into account.  Concerns about what kind of message you put out and how it relates to different cultures – we’re putting up a Russian website right now and translation is daunting. 
Also, back in the old days trying to find a suitable location in Macao for bigger conferences was a really big headache.  Nowadays, the logistics are easier because we have the capacity.  However, with such huge capacity, how are we going to fill all that?  So, your challenges change according to what kind of product you have in Macao. 

T:  When you are establishing a global campaign, how often do you create a new campaign

H:  "The difference is Macao” campaign we’ve been keeping for a few years because, to be honest, you need a few years to build recall.  I can’t say exactly when we’re going to change it, but yes we need to be conscious of its life span.  To change a tagline, you need to look at the different markets - the possibility of cross-applying a certain tagline across so many different languages and cultures regarding what works and what doesn’t work. 

T:  Because of these challenges globally, with different cultures represented, have you found the emergence of alternative approaches in the marketing of Macao globally?

H:  There’s the overall umbrella of “The difference is Macao,” but obviously, when it comes to different translations, or the basic artwork, there would be subtle differences.  We would hear the opinions of our representatives and respect those interpretations.

T:  So, for the future of MGTO do you anticipate any changes, aside from a future location change?

H:  One area of rapid development during the past few years is that of business tourism.  MGTO will support the recently set up MICE Development Committee in moving forward this industry.  Also, a lot still needs to be done in terms of us finding new markets, packaging new products.  We will work much closer with the Cultural Affairs Bureau to further enhance the cultural branding of Macao.

The 3rd DBM Conference - Destination branding in a changing world

Aware of the need to develop an innovative approach to destination branding due to the radical changes in the global environment, the 3rd International Conference on Destination Branding and Marketing took place at the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT), Main Campus in December 2009. The conference was jointly organised by the International Tourism Research Centre of IFT, Purdue University, University of South Carolina and Sun Yat-sen University, with the support and sponsorship of the Macau Government Tourist Office and the Cultural Affairs Bureau. Over a hundred scholars and professionals from more than 30 countries attended the conference. 

The conference was engaging and vibrant with two keynote speeches on the emerging issues in the area of destination branding and marketing, namely “Branding Holistically” given by Dr. Liping Cai, Associate Dean, School of Consumer and Family Science, Purdue University, and “Destination Branding–I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by Dr. Nigel Morgan fromThe Welsh Centre for Tourism Research. Eight scholars and industry professionals were invited to share insights and advances in destination branding and marketing practices at the two plenary sessions.

Among the 40 papers presented, the Best Paper Awards were given to Ana María Munar (Copenhagen Business School, Denmark) for her paper “Tourist Created Content: Rethinking Destination Branding”, John Nadeau (Nipissing University, Canada), Norm O’Reilly (Syracuse University, USA, and Stanford University, USA) and Louise Heslop (Carleton University, Canada) for their paper “China’s Olympic Destination:  Beijing Tourist Evaluations of China and the 2008 Games”, and Sushma Seth Bhat (AUT University, New Zealand) for her paper “Five Levels of Cooperation in Destination Marketing”.

This 3rd DBM Conference provided an excellent opportunity and platform for professionals and researchers to interact and exchange the latest ideas and research outcomes, including the link between success, and destination identity, innovation, community involvement as well as partner collaboration.  As pointed out at the opening ceremony by Dr. Fanny Vong, the Conference Co-Chair and the President of IFT, the key issue is, “new knowledge and phenomena that are worth exploring”, in particular searching for “the kind of marketing strategies to recreate Macao’s image” as “a multidimensional tourist destination (presenting leisure, culinary art, and heritage)”.

CNI-IFT Advanced Certification in Strategic Hospitality Management

Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management (CNI) and IFT recently launched the CNI-IFT Advanced Certification in Strategic Hospitality Management, with the aim to provide industry executives with well-rounded training in Strategic Hospitality Management.

Twenty eight professionals from seventeen tourism & hospitality entities joined the first module on 11 & 12 January and gained insight from the coaching of Prof. Rohit Verma, CNI’s Executive Director for The Center for Hospitality Research.

This certification programme consists of four modules to be offered in 2010 and 2011.  Individuals can attend one or all of the following modules:

The University of Jinan, Shandong Province and IFT co-organised this event on 5 February. The objectives of the event were to encourage academic exchanges between the Mainland, Macao and other countries and to provide a platform for scholars to probe into the conservation and continuous development of tourism resources.

Scholars joining the Symposium were from Renmin University of China, China University of Geosciences (Beijing PRC), Beijing Union University (PRC), Beijing Institute of Petro-chemical Technology (PRC), Henan Polytechnic University (PRC), University of Jinan (Shandong PRC), IFT and M&D Forum (Australia).

We were honoured to invite Mr. Grant Bowie, President of MGM Grand Paradise Limited, and Dr. Baudouin Neirynck, IFT, to deliver the keynote speeches.

Adult Education Workshop

An “Adult Education Workshop – Updating your teaching skills” was held on 3-4 February in the Pousada Conference Room at IFT. Facilitated by Doris Ip, Dr. Sharif Shams Imon and Dr. Baudouin Neirynck, this two-day workshop was organised for the Tourism College and Professional And Continuing Education School faculty members who wanted to brush up their teaching skills and gain more confidence in classroom management. In small groups, the participants discussed their teaching experiences and explored the possibility of implementing an array of new teaching and learning methods within their lectures. 21 participants shared ideas on how to improve the teaching quality at the Institute as well as how to best facilitate the classroom learning environment.

Thinking ahead for the present: Recent developments in PACES

For years, PACES has been engaged in the design and development of high-quality learning, which is reflected in our mission, to cultivate novices for the tourism and hospitality industry as well as to create positive learning environments for individuals who long for personal enrichment.  To ensure the courses we offer are timely and relevant, we keep our eyes on the learning needs of the younger generation as well as the working population, who are pursuing further education in order to cope with the changing demands of society.  From management to cultural heritage, from creative studies to informational technology, from customer service to beauty therapy, new courses are being proposed and developed continuously. There is always something interesting to satisfy the need for lifelong learning or as an extension to other studies. In order to offer a more diverse portfolio of courses and to give locals an opportunity to gain worldwide recognised qualifications, PACES is expanding its list of international partners. Beauty is not skin deep

In order to enable students to gain a high standard of expertise, PACES has set up a new training venue at the Taipa Campus, which allows students to observe teachers’ demonstrations in great detail.

The growing interest in personal appearance and the sense of well-being has created expansion opportunities for beauty therapists.  This career is blooming in the local community as more and more resorts and hotels are setting up luxurious facilities to provide relaxing and rejuvenating spa and beauty services.  Although there are no set entry requirements, beauty therapists are usually expected to have acquired adequate professional training when they enter their careers.  The studies for aesthetics cover a variety of areas, such as cosmetology, hair design, nail technology, makeup and nutrition.  PACES will also collaborate with the Thai Heritage Spa School and the Ultramode Company to offer a series of courses and workshops in massage, skin treatment, hair setting, makeup and aromatherapy. Some of these are accredited by Confederation of International Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (CIBTAC), an international examination board for the education and training of beauty and holistic therapists.  The upcoming courses include CIBTAC Anatomy and Physiology, CIBTAC Aromatherapy, CIBTAC Diet and Nutrition, Certificate in Professional Bridal Makeup, Certificate in Hair Setting and Certificate in Professional Makeup and Image Building.  Please visit our website, www.ift.edu.mo/En/Programmes/ths_course.aspx, for more details.

Heritage Management students: The Hong Kong Wetland Park

HM3 Students ventured to the HK Wetland Park to learn how people in the park are developing sustainable tourism
On 2 November 2009 the Heritage Management Year 3 students ventured to the Hong Kong Wetland Park to learn how people in the park are developing sustainable tourism.  This reinforced their learning in the module entitled “Tourism Planning and Development.” The Hong Kong Wetland Park is a man-made park built by the Hong Kong government to conserve land for wetland birds, animals and ecology. There are different zones in the park for visitors to observe and learn about wetland ecology and conservation, such as visitor center, wetland discovery centre, butterfly garden and fishpond. These areas provide wetland insight to the visitors and allow all to enjoy the natural environment within an international city.
Through this fieldtrip, the participants learnt how the park was designed, how it operates and how park management encourages people to not only view, but to learn about wetland ecology. For example, the park was built with environmentally friendly materials like recycled concrete and old bricks.  Through doing this the park did not need to allot too much money for decorative materials and construction. In addition, they planned for numberous windows in the visitor center, so less electricity would be required to illuminate the halls. The park also cooperates closely with secondary schools and universities, so students will be able to learn more about the park, not only in a visitor’s role, but in hands-on fashion through the role of park staff, as students are encouraged to do volunteer work in the park. We learnt many things from this fieldtrip and we had a very good experience overall, which will help in our future studies and career as we have definitely acquired a deeper understanding of environmental friendliness and conservation. The Hong Kong Wetland Park demonstrates that with passion, we can overcome environmental challenges and change perceptions.

An insightful heritage field trip to Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong

On 18 December 2009 the IFT Student Union’s Heritage Club organised a heritage field trip to Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. The trip was taken by 32 students representing all of IFT’s majors of study.

The Hong Kong Museum of History was the first stop on the heritage tour with a detailed and meaningful guided tour of their current exhibition: The Hong Kong Story. The Hong Kong Story exhibition is comprised of 8 unique galleries, which together illustrate the Devonian time period sum 400 million years ago and concludes with the reunification of Hong Kong with China in 1997.

The second stop was the Museum of Art. Ms. Shirley Wong, the Museum’s Senior Manager,

delivered a presentation on museum management strategies.   Ms. Wong also shared her first-hand experiences in museum management. After the presentation, the Art Museum tour commenced with the viewing of a large number of art objects including the Ultimate South China Travel Guide, which takes viewers back to the high times of Canton in the 1800s, as well as Gems of Chinese Ceramics and the New Literati Painting exhibit.

The IFT field trip participants then took part in an 1881 Heritage field study. The 1881 Heritage site was once the general headquarters of the former Hong Kong Water Police. This old headquarters has been adapted (into a combination hotel and high-end shopping mall) by Hong Kong developers.  This use of heritage prompted some energetic discussion on heritage values and significance in general.

The IFT Heritage Club was established on 1 January 2009, and its members are generally Heritage Management students. The club encourages students and Macao residents to understand and learn about the heritage of Macao and the world. In April 2009, the Heritage Club organised a field trip to the Kaiping Diaolou Villages of Guangdong China.

New IFT Student Union (SU) representatives paid a courtesy visit to the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ). They met with Mr. Sou Chio Fai, Director of DSEJ on 25 January. During the visit, SU President, Mr. Wallace Ip, explained what IFT SU did in the previous year and what has been planned for this year; he also asked for the director’s advice. The Student Union got high appreciation from the Director for organising various successful and meaningful activities in the last year to enrich students’ campus life. This visit strengthened the relationship between the Student Union and DSEJ.

IFT raises funds for Haitian relief

Valentine’s Chocolate-selling Event

Haiti suffered from one of the strongest, most devastating earthquakes in 200 years on 12 January. More than 150,000 people lost their lives and many more people lost their homes in this horrific disaster. In an attempt to help the victims overcome some of the difficulties they face, the Student Union (SU) held a charity chocolate-selling event on the eve of Valentine’s Day. All the chocolates and flowers sold were made by SU members. Students and lecturers at both the main campus and the Taipa campus took an active part in this fund raising effort. All involved displayed sincere concern to help the victims. With their support and kindness, the chocolate-selling event was hugely successful.

The Green Fashion Show: A competition for a humanitarian reason

To further IFT’s raising of funds for Haiti earthquake relief, SU held a fun contest called the Green Fashion Show Competition on 26 March at the Amphitheatre.

During the competition, the participants showed their products to the judges and the audience. Wonderful performances and entertaining shows also took place throughout the competition, making it a memorable experience for all.

All funds raised will be donated to Haiti through the Red Cross. Special thanks to all who took part, for displaying your care and love to Haiti and the victims who are in need.

Welcoming Programme to exchange students in 2nd semester of 2009/10

IFT has welcomed a total of 23 new exchange students who journeyed to Macao from Mainland China, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden and The Netherlands for exchange programmes. To better integrate their studies at IFT and their life in Macao, a week-long Welcoming Programme was arranged in early February.

Anyone who travels to or lives in Macao should not miss the delicious and unique Macanese cuisine – a blend of Portuguese and Chinese culinary flavours – which cannot be found elsewhere in the world. So, a specially arranged activity during the week was “Chef for a Day”.  The exchange students, alongside our local students, prepared some Macanese dishes with the assistance of our chefs. A whole-day city tour, finishing with dinner at a local restaurant completed the week.

The Institute’s first two exchange pioneers to Saint John Canada, Maggie and Jake, embarked on their inaugural journey to the University of New Brunswick (UNBSJ) for the fall 2009/10 semester.  They offer highlights of their exchange experiences.


The UNBSJ campus is located on the beautiful seashore of Grand Bay on the east coast of Canada.
A diversity of interests and people made up the classes; I was impressed by all the interesting ideas put forth by my fellow students from all over the world. The teachers were always willing to help and the campus provided a friendly, supportive and fun learning environment with great helpful staff and faculty.

There were many activities organised like a Multicultural Festival, a trip to the Wine and Food Expo and regular movie nights.

It was ‘awesome’ as the Saint John locals often say, as I was not only immersed in an English-speaking environment, but also a highly culturally diverse learning atmosphere.  This exchange programme allowed me to see the world from a completely different perspective.

A study exchange in Canada offers the promise of experiencing western culture in a unique way as the reality of multi-cultural communities exists, within which people do not shed, but celebrate their (and each other’s) ethnic heritage, and in general, it is a land brimming with diversity on many levels – culturally and geographically.

Study exchange in the Netherlands

Recently I had the opportunity to study as an exchange student at the NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands for half a year.

The lifestyle in European countries is completely different from that in Asia. I think the experience of staying abroad for a longer period of time is highly enriching and thought provoking, as opposed to being a tourist in town for only a few days.

Younger Dutch people generally speak English very well, but the elderly rarely speak English. The Dutch people love to make new friends when they go out; I saw that they greet everyone in the street.

At NHTV students were always organising interesting activities, and we had pleasant relations with each other. I made some Chinese cuisine and others made Dutch cuisine, so we could try each others’ food.

I also travelled to other places in Europe and I found that being a backpacker can be really tough when one is used to staying in nice hotels in Asia.  My exchange experience has been one of the best experiences of my life!
