Creating a community service culture

Macao is fast becoming an international tourism destination. With huge investments made in hardware, the city can boast having some of the most attractive and comprehensive gaming and entertainment products and complexes in Asia (perhaps second only to Las Vegas). Yet, great visitor experience comes not only from the glitz and glamour of the places they visit, but most importantly, from the quality of service encounters – or those moments of truth.

Service encounters extend beyond the hotel lobby, casino floor and the shopping mall. Visitors come into contact with service providers everywhere they go in the city. Residents could become service providers unknowingly, simply by giving directions and offering information or assistance. Living in a tourism destination, many Macao residents have learned to become aware of visitor needs. Some are willing to extend genuine hospitality. If only this attitude could be shared among more local residents, the city would become a more attractive and welcoming destination. How to instil such a service culture among community members is an interesting topic to explore.


Since September, IFT has been running a second campus in Taipa. The added space allows the Institute to venture into new grounds and increase training capacity. Among our many initiatives is the new “Community Education and Development Programme (CEDP)”. This project is composed of a wide range of basic tourism and hospitality related skills and knowledge transfer modules offered free to Macao residents. The aim is to create awareness among the wider community of the importance of tourism development in the city, to enhance sensitivity to visitor needs, to train a ready pool of talent and to direct interested residents to vocational and career opportunities in the rapidly expanding tourism industry. The CEDP gains support from numerous local community and trade associations. Among our partners are the Macao Neighbourhood Association, Women’s Association and the Labour Union. With their community influence, we are hopeful that our training effort would serve different strata of the community effectively and together, we raise the expected standard of service excellence in the city.

"Walking the talk: Modelling excellent customer service"

Ms. Connie Chio, General Manager of Casa Real Hotel, has forged a new service culture. Connie often paces the 381-room casino hotel to reinforce the service ethos she has taken such pains to cultivate among her 420 employees.

IFT: What was the hotel like when you first came on board as General Manager in 2005?

CC: The Golden Resorts Group had just acquired the Hotel. Employees at Casa Real were demoralised, disorganised, and sloppy. The extent of the problem hit me when I visited the staff canteen. The place was in disrepair, with a dripping ceiling, dirty run-down walls, and litter all over the floor. Employees had no qualms about throwing rubbish on the floor as they ate, or chain-smoking in people’s faces. They said management didn’t care about them, so they didn’t care about the hotel. You can imagine what kind of service they were giving to customers! I felt that any improvement to morale had to start at the staff canteen. It took half a year to renovate the canteen, and two years to build up trust amongst the employees.

IFT: What did you do to win your staff’s trust?

CC: Mainly I got to know them, one-by-one, up-close at their work stations. Every day from about 1100 till 1430 I’d pace the hotel floor by floor, observing people at work, chatting with everybody - whether restaurant staff, front office or housekeeping. Initially, people were afraid of me; now I can’t even eat my lunch in the canteen without someone coming over to say hello every five minutes.

IFT: So “management by wandering around” has been a resounding success in getting your staff to serve well?

CC: To a certain extent. It is not enough for me to tell my staffs how I expect them to treat our customers. I often watch them serve, then afterwards correct some of their mistakes, or suggest better ways. Or, I would sometimes serve customers myself, to model the kind of greeting or behaviour that I want my staff to adopt. At the frontline is where the moment of truth of customer service really hits us. This personal coaching while walking on my rounds seems to work very well with rank and file employees.

Having said that, the amount of direct coaching I give to staff is decreasing. The main reason is a drop in staff turnover this past year - including at the department head level. So now, the majority of department heads know how to do this coaching, and I require them to do the job while I play the role of observer.

IFT: Do you have high turnover among your managers as a result of pressure from you?

CC: We have high turnover rate among our top level of management, but low turnover rate among the middle level managers. We have an average employee turnover across all levels of about 20% per year, which is pretty much what most hotels are experiencing in Macao. This is a reflection of market opportunities, changing social values, and salary expectations rather than pressure from me!

IFT: So what are your goals for service excellence, and how do you think you can achieve them?

CC: Morale is quite high, but we need to do much more training and development. At the moment, guest comments average a score of 3 out of 5. Our target for the next year is to get a score of 4 out of 5. Also, we don’t have a computerised customer relations management database; so, to better identify valued customers we have to keep improving our systems and our people, to ride out the economic slowdown.

IFT trainers conduct UNESCO Training Workshop in Indonesia

Participants of the UNESCO Training Workshop in Indonesia

Established by UNESCO and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), the Asian Academy for Heritage Management (AAHM), together with the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) Macao, launched the Cultural Heritage Specialist Guides (CHSG) Programme in 2005. This programme consists of two stages – the Heritage Tour Guide Course and the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Interpretation Course. As part of the programme and as the regional focal point of AAHM, IFT faculty members have to date, conducted training workshops in Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam - having trained academics, government officials and professionals from 14 countries.

This pioneering and practical training programme aims at capacity building of trainers involved in guide training as well as the professional quality of guides operating at World Heritage sites in order to ensure quality visitor experience and help protect the cultural value of the sites. At the 31st session of the World Heritage Committee in 2007, the CHSG Programme was recognised as "a best-practice example of an initiative aiming at integrating the conservation of World Heritage within the wider sustainable development framework for the benefit of local communities", which explains the international recognition of this programme.

As a part of the CHSG programme, a Training-of-Trainers (TOT) workshop was held at IFT in January 2009 and a follow-up Cluster Training of Trainers Workshop for the Cultural Heritage Specialist Guide Programme was held at the Manohara Hotel, Borobudur Temple Compounds, Indonesia between 10-14 August 2009. Building upon foundations of the Macao workshop, participants and representatives from key governmental departments and dedicated non-governmental organisations gathered there. They drafted and finalised training materials, curriculum and licensing systems for possible national and local implementation of the CHSG programme in China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The workshop also served as an inspiration and reference for new observers and participants from Brunei and Timor-Leste.

The workshop strived to fulfil the dual goals of advising on and assisting with the preparation for national and local implementation along with introducing new participants to the programme. Participants were introduced to the Regional Skills and Knowledge Standards (RKKS) and worked towards bridging gaps and strengthening commonalities between the existing standards of local and national training programmes and standards of the Cultural Heritage Specialist Guide Programme.

Site visits led by top Indonesian guides and experts also served the dual purpose of allowing participants to deepen their knowledge of the Borobudur and Prambanan Temple Compounds and of illustrating what a specialist tour experience can be like. All in all, the workshop fulfilled its purpose of following-up on the issues identified in the Super TOT Workshop in IFT Macao in January and in serving as a platform for the implementation of the CHSG programme in participating countries. Participants who attended the previous IFT Super TOT Workshop were able to work towards the drafting of training materials, curriculum(s) and National Action Plans in the workshop, while their newer counterparts were able to apply some of the CHSG ideas and concepts in the development and management plans of their key cultural tourism sites.

Upcoming graduation of first Heritage and Tourism Event Management students marks important IFT milestone

The first batch of Heritage Management and Tourism Event Management Bachelor Degree Programme students will be graduating in November. Some of them are now entering their profession, while many others have been admitted into well known overseas higher education institutions for postgraduate programmes. Their success demonstrates diligence over the last four years of study at IFT and proves that the educational standard of IFT in these areas has gained worldwide recognition.

One graduate of Heritage Management Bachelor Degree Programme, Inaciso Chan, has been admitted into Hong Kong University’s Architecture Conservation Programme (Master Degree Programme). Inaciso, with his passion for antiques and old buildings, believed that it was the right subject for him. Inaciso is looking forward to the Architecture Conservation Programme in which he can gain more experience and knowledge in built heritage conservation.

An executive development program jointly organised by the IFT and the Cornell-Nanyang Institute for Hospitality on “Strategic Hotel Pricing” brought together 31 hotel senior managers, professionals and educators on 23 and 24 July for a refreshing look at how pricing was being done in Macao’s hotels. The important message that the instructor, Dr Stowe Shoemaker, brought to the industry leaders was most timely: “In an economic downturn, customers are very important and they have more power, so what we talked about how to make customers come to Macao, spend more money and be happy with what they get.”

In the hotel industry worldwide, it is common to find that “customers want to buy an experience; hotels want to sell rooms.” This perceptual gap makes hotels offer preset room prices that may not be what customers want to pay. The key to competitive pricing, according to Dr. Shoemaker, is to proactively set prices according to customers’ – not the hotels’ – reservation prices.

Dr. Shoemaker is the Donald Hubbs Distinguished Professor at the University of Houston’s Conrad Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, and a member of the Executive Education faculty at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. He was also on the faculty of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Having entered academia directly from the industry, Dr. Shoemaker is able to bring to the EDP his many years of experience in the F&B sector and a family hotel in Vermont, USA, as well as his consulting and research collaboration with many top global hotel chains including Marriot and Intercontinental.

Participants in the IFT-CNI program left with new insights and a new set of tools on how to make customer relationship management (CRM) work better for the revenue department. Being able to identify who the customers are, what they expect, and how much they are willing to pay is crucial to a hotels’ ability to offer the right choices of products to meet their customers’ needs.

Mr Luis Lobo, General Manager of StarWorld Hotel, felt that the programme gave him new ideas and techniques that he can take back to brainstorm with his team, in preparation for the huge Galaxy Megaworld Resort project that his company is developing on COTAI.

Another participant, IFT lecturer Miguel Gassmann de Oliveira, liked the programme’s focus on creating customer loyalty. He said, “Today’s hotel market is very competitive, with many hotels offering a similar product at a similar price. Therefore, the hotels need to find a system or a method in which they can differentiate themselves from each other so as to create loyalty.”

As the cities in the Pearl River Delta are integrating into one of the world’s largest metropolitan regions, tourism services in these cities are becoming more connected than ever before. Four scholars from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, who comprise a tourism research powerhouse on the Mainland, informed the audience of new developments and trends of integration amongst the cities of the delta.

Fifty professionals, from public and private sectors, scholars and students joined the lecture to learn more about the following topics:

This lecture looked at why many companies fail even though their marketing plans appear sound. The presentation addressed common mistakes in traditional marketing planning and illustrated how service planning could help co-creation values between employees and customers. Dr. Rosenbaum discussed an eight-step service planning framework, which strategises a series of activities once the customer enters the exchange process. The framework also calls for better integration among various business functions that support the service encounter.

IFT staff member publishes paper in SSCI listed journal

Dr. Edmund Sheng’s paper entitled “A Sensible Policy Tool for Pareto Improvement: Capital Controls” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of World Trade for June 2010. The journal is a top research journal specialising in international economics.

Previously he had four papers published in leading international journals such as the Elsevier and Taylors and Francis listed on the Social Sciences Citation Index.

The AnYang Tourism Board participates in tourism training at IFT

Delegation from AnYang Tourism Board and IFT representatives

In response to an invitation from the AnYang Tourism Board, Henan Province, IFT offered a tourism management programme to a group of 23 senior government officials and high ranking industry professionals from AnYang City and nearby regions. The programme took place at IFT from 31 August to 3 September and ended with a certificate presentation ceremony held on the last day of the programme.

AnYang City, home to pre-historic cavemen during the Stone Age, is an ancient city with a history of over 3000 years and is one of the eight ancient capitals of China. It is one of the key birthplaces of Chinese ancient culture. In 2006, the archaeological site of Yin Xu was inscribed to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Yin Xu is a testimony to the golden age of early Chinese culture; since its inscription, the number of international tourists visiting Anyang has increased dramatically - especially amongst visitors from Korea and Japan. AnYang is also famed for its beautiful natural scenery. The city itself administers four districts, one country-level city and four counties.

With the coordination of Mr. Zhang Jianguo, Director of the AnYang Tourism Board, the delegates of this study trip included Directors and Deputy Directors of the Tourism Board of AnYang City and its administered regions, and a number of leading travel operators.

Mr. Zhang Jianguo told local media he was pleased to bring his delegates to Macao for this study trip. He said Macao tourism has developed rapidly in these last few years and that he expects to learn from the successful experiences of Macao and apply this insight towards promotion of the AnYang tourism industry.

The programme covered a wide range of topics, including the origin of UNESCO World Heritage, Tourism Economics in the MICE Industry, Destination Management, Tourist Management, and Tourism Impacts from the Economics perspective, while also sharing successful cases in the Asia-Pacific region. The participants visited the Grand Lisboa and Wynn hotels, where they had a chance to learn about the back-of-house operations of these large hotel complexes. These visits also allowed the AnYang representatives to exchange ideas with local industry professionals.

In the past, IFT has offered similar tourism management programmes to government officials and industry professionals of ShanXi, HeBei and Inner Mongolia. Through these professional programmes, government officials and industry professionals from these mainland provinces were able to learn from the good and bad experiences that Macao has seen during its rapid tourism development. Due to the role of Macao as a platform of economic cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, IFT also organised a series of tourism management programmes for various Portuguese speaking countries.

Recently, two IFT students received awards in the ceremony held at Macao Polytechnic Institute for their demonstrated creativity and talent in area writing competitions. Year Two student, Terence Poon Chon Meng, received an “Excellence” Award in the 5th Macao-Wide English Slogan Competition. Year One student, Jake Cheng Ming Ming, received “1st Runner-Up” in the 3rd Macao-Wide College English & Portuguese Writing Competition. Congratulations to both of these IFT standouts!

In this, my second cultural exchange trip to Beijing, I assisted the Department of Painting and Calligraphy in the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, (on the World Heritage List). I deepened my knowledge of book of rubbings. I admire those Chinese experts who laboured long and hard in this endeavour. Within the few days I spent in Beijing, and through the visit to a number of historical buildings and museums, I had a chance to appreciate various brilliant works of art including paintings, ceramics and other exhibits. All of them allowed me to understand what luxurious life the ancient Chinese noblemen had.

Despite the short stay in Beijing, I had lots of deep experiences, ranging from work to daily life.

Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM)-IFT Joint Summer International Exchange Programme in Gwalior, India, 22-28 June 2009.

For the first time in 11 years, the IFT Summer Programme was held outside Macao. This has been a joint programme between our APETIT (Network of Asia-Pacific Education and Training Institute in Tourism) member, the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management, and IFT. Fourteen students from Macao and overseas tertiary education institutions participated in the programme. They all had a wonderful experience.

To all of us, India is full of mysterious and fascinating things. This land evokes thoughts of its mysterious cultures and religions, ancient legends and the unique way of life. Also, India’s heritage sites, and its reputation of being “the cradle of Yoga” added to our interest in this exchange programme. India does not just educate about its culture tourism, but also provides a chance to get to know the world in a wider way. - Carol Zhang Xiaoyue

In class, lecturers and a guest speaker discussed culture, religion and the trends in Indian tourism with us. On the last day, we gave small presentations, both in groups and individually. Moreover, we met some local students who were participating in another exchange programme there. We talked, introduced tourism places of our own countries to each other, and even had a competition on wearing Indian Sari, which is the traditional female dress in India. - Stella Want Sijing

Hong Kong PolyU: From an IFT exchange student’s perspective
Zora at Hong Kong Polytechnic University

During the first half of 2009, I was an exchange student at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Over the first five months I not only had a great study experience, but I developed into a confident, professional, independent person and have made life-long friends.

Before embarking on my exchange, some of my friends (even a few of my professors) seemed a little surprised that I chose Hong Kong as my exchange destination, as it is so close to Macao. The regions are close, yet I could feel great differences between Macao and Hong Kong the moment I stepped off the ferry in Kowloon. The fast pace of life is the first and most impressive aspect that I noticed in this city, and studying in this up-tempo atmosphere is quite exciting.

I have enjoyed a lot of fun at the University and I have even formed some new opinions and fresh ideas for my direction of study, my career and my life’s planning. Although it is not a distant environment, it truly provide a high quality, enriching, self-satisfying learning experience; I recommend exchange students in the future to consider Hong Kong Polytechnic University as one of their top choices.

It was my first time to have classes with American students, first time to take road trips with all European schoolmates, first time to manage a real wedding for an American couple, first time to teach American classmates Portuguese while they taught me English, and first time to serve as a voluntary receptionist for the Hospitality Day Of South Carolina festival.

I learned how to be independent and how to get along with people from different countries with diversified cultures. I sincerely thank IFT and USC for providing me with such a precious experience. I hope more IFT students can benefit from this marvellous opportunity, just like I did. World does not seem that big when you take the first step to approach it!

Beijing summer cultural exchange activity

In order to attain wisdom, it is not enough merely to read books; you must be well travelled as well. Together with students from Hong Kong and Macao, I visited many amazing tourist attractions in Beijing such as Hutongs, old Beijing buildings, and modern commercial districts. Through the locals in Beijing, I saw a lot and understood a great deal. With every experience, I could understand the people and the culture of Beijing from the past till the present. Although I had a brief time to work and live there, Beijing is still memorable.

Overseas exchange interns at IFT

IFT has welcomed three exchange interns from University of Nevada Las Vegas (Singapore campus) and Glion Institute of Higher Education, Switzerland since June 2009.

Throughout their six months at IFT, the exchange interns will receive on and off campus training.

We are pleased to introduce our new faculty members who are joining IFT this academic year 2009/10.
New Faculty members of Tourism College
   
Kitty FONG Kit Sam joins us as an instructor specialising in accounting. Kitty received her Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Macau, with a major in Accounting. After attaining her degree, Kitty joined one of the big four auditing firms in Macao and was relocated to Beijing, PRC. Kitty has also worked in the gaming industry as an internal auditor.
   
Dr. Jennifer GAO Hong joins us as a visiting professor. She earned her PhD in organisational behaviour from the University of Macau. She has taught courses in the field of organisational behaviour, human resources management, marketing and microeconomics at Macau University of Science and Technology, Jinan University, PRC and the University of Macau. Her research interests are in organisational behaviour, human resources management, and cross-cultural comparisons. She has published in several international journals and conferences.
   
Samuel LAM Chi Chiu joins us as a lecturer in management. Samuel completed a Master of Philosophy in Hotel & Tourism Management at the School of Hotel of Tourism Management, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009. In addition, he obtained the qualification of Certified Hospitality Educator from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute in 2008. He has been teaching various subjects, including principles and practices of management, human resources management, and sales and marketing skills for travel personnel, the introduction to the travel industry, principles of tourism, contemporary tourism issues and data analysis. Samuel’s research interests include film-induced tourism, relationships between tourism and media, tourism impacts and tourists’ behaviours.
   
Teresa LAM Sze Lui joins us as an English instructor. Teresa holds a Master of Education in Social Education and a diploma in English Language Teaching. Before joining IFT, she taught English to undergraduates in different tertiary institutes in Macao and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses to casino staff. Teresa also has experience with a variety of students, ranging from primary students to seniors. She is particularly interested in learner motivation and learning styles.
   
Simon LEI Kong joins us as a lecturer in computer studies. Simon received his Master of Business Administration from California State University East Bay, USA and his Master of Science from New York University, USA. Prior to joining IFT, Simon held various supervisory positions at several multinational organisations in information technology, public utility, hospitality and education sectors.
   
Laurie MALUNGU joins us as an English lecturer. She completed her Master of Arts in Education from Landegg International University in Switzerland and is presently completing her Doctorate in Education at the University of Durham in the UK. Laurie has been teaching at the tertiary level and developing curriculum in Asia for 23 years (Chinese Taiwan, Guangxi PRC, and Macao) and is well aware of challenges Asian students face in acquiring English proficiency. Her research interests are in the areas of language acquisition, language learning motivation and raising the professional efficacy of language teachers.
   
Michael MCGUIRE joins us as an English instructor. Michael received his Master of Business from the University of Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Michael spent five years working as a sales manager, trainer, and mentor for a worldwide computer firm from 1999 to 2003. The last six years have been spent teaching English as a Second Language in Chinese Taiwan. Michael taught Business English, American Corporate Culture, along with Resume and Interviewing Skills at National Cheng Kung University, Chinese Taiwan. Over the last three years Michael has focused on TOEFL and IELTS preparation for undergraduate and graduate students preparing to study abroad. As a certified IELTS Examiner, Michael enjoys helping students achieve their dreams of becoming proficient in English.
   
Geoffrey NG Chak Ki joins us as a lecturer in management. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic Engineering from California, USA, his Master of Applied Science from the University of Toronto, Canada and his MBA from Syracuse University, USA. He has been a Certified Company Director in Singapore since 1999. He has held various academic and consulting appointments in Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong. He also held executive positions in several multinational firms. Currently, he teaches Year 4 students in Strategic Management. One of his personal goals in teaching is to further enhance the confidence of his students.
   
Stephen SAYERS joins us an English lecturer. He has been living and teaching English in Macao and China for over 15 years. He has gained Master Degrees in TESOL and in Music from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Within the field of applied linguistics and teaching, his special interests are in discourse analysis, learner differences and curriculum design.
   
Dr. Samuel TONG Kai Chung joins us as an invited assistant professor. He received his Doctoral Degree in Economics from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, PRC. He has participated in the Strategic Marketing Management Executive Programme at Harvard Business School, USA, in the WTO/UNESCAP Trade Policy Course on WTO Agreements and in the DOHA Development Agenda at the United Nations and World Trade Organization, Thailand. Samuel also worked for years within the airline, travel agency and airport industries as head of marketing. Tourism and transportation economics and policy, industrial economics and policy, international trade and regionalisation, institutional economics and marketing are his areas of interest in teaching and research.
   
Kelvin WONG Kin Ming joins us as an instructor specialising in mathematics, computation and education. After obtaining his first degree in mathematics and computation, Kelvin joined the computing industry in France, having similar experience in China and Hong Kong. With great interest in education, he continued his career in the academic field, mainly teaching mathematics, computing and music for five years. He has also participated in the government’s mathematics curriculum reform for lower secondary school.
   
New faculty members of Professional And Continuing Education School
   
Sharon FONG Wai Peng joins us as an instructor specialising in graphic design. After Sharon received her Bachelor in Graphic Communication and Higher Diploma in Visual Arts (Educational) from the Higher School of Arts in the Macau Polytechnic Institute, she received her Master of Arts degree, specialising in Copperplate, from Guangzhou Arts School, PRC. Sharon started her academic career in 2000; since then, she has taught courses in the field of art & design history, drawing, illustration and technique of material expression.
   
Tina FU Io Tong joins us as an instructor of graphic design. She has a Bachelor in Graphic Communication Design from Macau Polytechnic Institute. After her graduation, she worked as a graphic designer in a marketing and design company for three years. She started her teaching career in 2002 as a graphic design tutor in the Macau Career Development Center and the Macau Tourism and Casino Career Centre. She was also a part-time teacher of basic computer graphics at the Macau Polytechnic Institute in 2006.
   
Jacky LAO Si Pan joins us as an instructor. He received his Master degree from the Macau University of Science and Technology. He worked for the Macau Tourism and Casino Career Centre for three years and taught courses in computer science and marketing research.
   
Billion LEONG Weng Pan joins us as an instructor in Information Technology. Billion obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Engineering from Jinan University in Guangzhou, PRC. He previously worked for the Macau Tourism and Casino Career Centre as a lecturer of Information Technology Courses.
   
Jeff LEONG Wai Hong joins PACES as an English and Business instructor. Jeff was an English and business teacher in the Career Development Center and the Macau Tourism and Casino Career Centre for more than seven years; at the same time, he was lecturing part-time in business courses for the Macau Polytechnic Institute.
   
Shirley LEUNG Wing joins us as an instructor in Mandarin. She received her Master of Arts Degree in Chinese Language Studies from the Beijing Language and Culture University in Beijing, PRC. Shirley has been promoting Putonghua and Mandarin studies in Macao for more than 20 years. She was one of the pioneers in Putonghua news presentation and education programmes in the late 1980’s. She has worked as a Putonghua instructor in various schools and subordinate education centers of Macau Polytechnic Institute since the late 1980’s. She is one of the national qualified examiners in Macao for the National Putonghua Proficiency Test, Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC).
   
Queenie TANG Cheng U joins us as an instructor specialising in advertising, public relations and retail management. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Macau and her Master Degree in Mass Communications from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Prior to starting her academic career, Queenie had worked in the media and retail industry.

The Community Education and Development Programme (CEDP) is a newly established academic unit which uses our Taipa Campus as its training centre.
