The aims of the Internship |
| 1.1 |
To allow undergraduates an opportunity to consolidate their theoretical foundation through practical experience. A major component of this experience is the formation of a professional attitude. |
| 1.2 |
To
allow undergraduates to develop their
personality and capacity to adapt to,
and handle, challenging situations.
The undergraduates are expected to enhance
the following skills during the period
of internship:
- communications skills
- interpersonal skills
- technical skills
- teamwork skills
- management skills; and
- problem-solving skills |
| 1.3 |
To
help undergraduates explore their interest
in future career development. |
| |
| Undergraduates who are of year 3 standing (have earned 64 credits or more) are eligible to do their internship. Those who have failed subjects are allowed to take up to three failed or missed subjects during their internship. |

Internship duration/timing |
Ideally, students scheduled for internships in the 1st semester of academic year 2008/09 should begin their internship placements between 12 June & 5 August 2008 and must end by 4 February 2009. On the other hand, students scheduled for internships in the 2nd semester of academic year 2008/09 should begin their internship placements between 20 January & 1 March 2009 and must end by 31 August 2009. The internship programme requires that a student be employed for a minimum of 6 calendar months, work an average of 35 hours per week and complete a minimum total of 800 work hours. The earliest date on which a student can start his/her internship is immediately after the final examination of the preceding semester. Students wishing to graduate in November of the following academic year should have completed their required 6 calendar months’ internship with all the relevant documents submitted. |

Application for internship |
| 4.1 |
It is the primary responsibility of students to search for, contact, and negotiate with their potential internship provider(s) regarding the details of the internship arrangements. |
| 4.2 |
In the placement searching stage, students are obligated to inform the internship provider(s) about the possibility of having to retake any subjects during the internship. |
| 4.3 |
Once the academic results are released, students are required to seek the approval from the internship provider(s) immediately if they need to retake any subjects during the internship. The internship provider(s) has the right to refuse such requests if they have not been informed by the student in advance. |
| 4.4 |
Students who failed to inform the internship provider(s) or misled them may face one or more of the following disciplinary actions as deemed appropriate by The Institute For Tourism Studies - Internship Committee (IC):
- Mandatory withdrawal of all retaking subjects;
- Mandatory withdrawal of the internship program;
- Undertake two extra months of internship or other penalties deemed appropriate by the IC. |
| 4.5 |
Once students have notified the Registry or the IC of the internship placement that they accept or intend to accept, no change can be made even though a better offer comes up. And if they really want to change their internship provider after having confirmed with the IC with no solid and convincing reason but their personal preference, they will work for 2 extra months before they officially commence their internship to make up for an 8-month internship or other penalties deemed appropriate by the IC while their internship performance on the extra 2 months will as well be evaluated. Any students who will be given penalty by the IC will be automatically excluded from the consideration for “The Student with the Best Internship Record”. |
| 4.6 |
Students should ensure that a place of internship is secured before the beginning of the internship period. The IC, however, reserves the right for final approval or disapproval of such arrangements, on a case-by-case basis (See “Internship placement confirmation procedures” on the IFT website or on Portal). |

Single / multiple internship arrangement |
| During the course of the internship period, the student may work with a maximum of two internship providers which can be arranged before the commencement of the internship period or during the internship period. In either case, the student should receive approval from the IC before making final arrangements. Under very exceptional circumstances (e.g., reasons due to illness, accidents) beyond the students’ control, students can work for more than 2 internship providers subject to the approval of the IC. |
| |
| 6.0
Qualifying internship placement |
| 6.1 |
Students can choose their desired area of work and their internship provider(s), provided that the internship position(s) assumed should be similar to an employment which an undergraduate may obtain upon graduation from the Institute. |
| 6.2 |
Students must prioritize obtaining internship placements at organizations that operate in an area with close relevance to their major of study. |
| |
| 7.1 |
A student
passes the internship if and when s/he:
- Satisfies
the conditions stipulated in article 3 of
this policy document.
- Receives a passing evaluation from the internship providers and the IC based on the Final Internship Provider Evaluation Form and other sessions of the Internship Logbook as well as the comments from the site-visit / telephone interview with the supervisor; and
- Submits the
Internship Logbook to the Registry within
14 calendar days after the last day of the
internship. Late submissions will not be entertained
and a Fail grade will be given for the internship. |
| 7.2 |
If the student is dismissed by the internship provider at any time during the internship, the IC will conduct an investigation upon receiving formal notification from the internship provider. If the investigation shows that the dismissal is due to the student’s improper behavior, violation of the internship agreement and/or company rules, the student will receive a Fail grade as a result. If the investigation shows that the student is not at fault, the student is allowed to continue the internship in another internship provider. |
