Biography

Dr Ubaldino Sequeira Couto is an assistant professor in the School of Hospitality Management (SHM) at the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies. He is also the academic coordinator for Tourism Event Management programmes and is responsible for developing the new postgraduate programmes in events management.

Dr Couto read his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Leeds Beckett University under the supervision of Professor Emma Wood and Dr Alexandra Kenyon exploring the role of diaspora festivals in encouraging social inclusion. He spent some time working in the services industry prior to his academic career. He has extensive experience working in education specialising in events management, teaching both theory and practical courses as well as supervising students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr Couto serves on various academic committees and supports numerous projects contributing to the pedagogic development of the Institute. Dr Couto is actively engaged in research related to festivals and events, in particular research in diaspora festivals and equality, safeguarding cultural festivals and the Macanese identity. Dr Couto regularly organises a number of international academic conferences and is member of editorial boards of Event Management, International Journal of Event and Festival Management and Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Insights. He is also the Regional Development Editor for Event Management, a role close to his heart, which involves coordinating efforts among regional editors around the world to advance the journal impact and champion for events studies. Dr Couto is often interviewed by local media for his expertise and views of the events sector. He is also a member of international professional and local associations. Ubaldino is an avid aviation enthusiast and passionate in musical theatre.

Dr Couto is responsible in one of the Institute's signature courses: Event Management: Hosting an Event (MICE311) which students need to conceptualise, plan, implement, manage, operate and evaluate a public live event. This course runs in each semester and the theme of these events are extremely diverse as students typically work with not-for-profit organisations and a range of businesses which share and uphold similar values. He is also responsible the daily operations of the team and the new postgraduate programmes in events management. Dr Couto is keenly interested in research collaboration, in particular on festivals and events, Macanese identity and experiential learning in the events, tourism and hospitality education.
