2. What is the career path for academic staff at IFT?
The career path for academic staff at IFT follows the Portuguese polytechnic system and is shown below. There are 4 scales within the Assistant Professor (Professor Adjunto) level and there are 5 scales within the Professor (Professor Coordenador) level. It normally takes two to three years before one progresses to a higher scale. Promotion depends on merit (academic and research quality, and contribution to the Institute and community), not just on seniority but also the needs of the Institute. Once an assistant professor reaches scale 4, it may take another 2-3 years (again depending on merit more than seniority) to progress to Professor (scale 1). A panel will be convened to evaluate the application for promotion to Assistant Professor and Professor. The maximum remuneration a professor (scale 5) gets is MOP61,380 per month for 14 months, subject to a progressive tax rate of 7% - 12%.

For the post of professor, a PhD degree in the relevant area, solid academic experience at the tertiary level and a reputable track record of research are expected. For the post of assistant professor, a PhD degree in a relevant area and substantial academic experience at the tertiary level are expected.
