<![CDATA[Fire Drill 2014 (Taipa Campus)]]>

Thank you for your participation at the fire drill on 21 November 2014 (Friday).

With your contribution, we were able to save all of our lives in 6.5 minutes . This includes two students, who kindly helped us to pretend as injured personnel left in a room to be rescued.

The drill has prepared ourselves for this life-threatening accident physiologically and physically. It has also examined the hardware and facilities for fire prevention successfully.

We appreciate your understanding and supports for the life-saving event. Let’s keep a good sense of fire safety, no matter you are in or outside the campus!

<![CDATA[IFT signing the Occupational Safety and Health Agreement]]>

IFT has been striving to keep the campus a safe place for students and colleagues since the beginning. Thanks for your contribution, we are very pleased to tell you that our efforts are awarded.

We, as a whole, have fulfilled the requirements from the Labour Affairs Bureau to join the Occupational Safety and Health Agreement. On 22 Oct 2014, representatives from IFT management and staff have signed the agreement. The signing was witnessed by the Director of Labour Affairs Bureau, and many hoteliers attending the ceremony.

It is an honour to join the agreement, yet it is even more important to ensure that everyone in our team is working in a safe place, and our students can learn safe practice from us.

<![CDATA[Prevention of Dengue Fever]]>

In response to the Southeast Asian region and Guangdong dengue epidemic, for those who are travelling to those dengue endemic areas are advised to stay in the accommodation with mosquito-proof facilities, wear light-colored and long-sleeved clothing and use mosquitoes repellent on exposed areas. In Macao, you are advised totake all precautionary measures, such as installing window screens, use of mosquito coils and wear light-colored long-sleeved clothing and use mosquito repellent on exposed areas. Aedes albopictus is active in the morning and evening activities, hence, please pay special attention during those times.

Dengue fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the dengue virus, this virus mosquito (Aedes albopictus) bites humans and spreading the disease. Aedes likes to lay eggs on clean and a small amount of still water. Hence, you are all advised to clear the extra water found in the containers of office/home water plants, pots, air-conditioner and outdoor water containers too.

Early symptoms of dengue fever like fever, joints, muscles, and orbital pain, skin rash may occur after a few days. SSM urged the public if any of the above symptoms appears shall seek for medical attention immediately and report their travel history to the doctor(especially for those patients who are back from the dengue endemic areas).

<![CDATA[Top 6 Super food in Summer]]>What to eat to be healthier in summer: Top 6 Super food in Summer

These fruits and vegetables are in season now and deliver maximum health benefits.

Blueberries: The Indigo-Colored Antioxidant

Reason: These berries one of the few foods that are naturally blue—have sky-high levels of antioxidants, which combat the damage done by inflammation. Anthocyanins, the natural plant compounds that give blueberries their deep color, may have antidiabetic effects as well.

Red Bell Peppers: A Sweet, Crunchy Punch of Vitamin C

Reason: While all peppers are very low in calories (about 25 per cup), reds which taste sweeter and milder are best for you. They contain 11 times more beta-carotene than green bell peppers and while the green variety delivers 60 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C, red gives you 240 percent!

Tomatoes: Heart, Skin and Brain Protector in Summer

Reason: Lycopene is highest in very red tomatoes; the antioxidant has a long list of benefits, from protecting skin against the sun's UV rays, to slowing arterial aging, to fighting heart disease, stroke, memory loss and impotence.

Watermelon: A Pick-Me-Up with Added Benefits

Reason: Aside from its ability to refresh us, watermelon also delivers lycopene. It can also be an effective weapon against prehypertension, a precursor to cardiovascular disease.

Beets: Colorful Guards Against Cancer and High Blood Pressure

Reason: They contain several disease-fighting phytonutrients, including the pigment betacyanin, which gives them their distinctive hue. Beets are also a good source of folate, which guards against birth defects, colon cancer and osteoporosis and are high in fiber and beta-carotene, beet juice reduces blood pressure too.

Figs: Jammed with Fiber, Calcium and Jam-Like Flavor

Reason: Used for millennia in ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures, figs are an excellent source of dietary fiber (almost 2 grams each). They're also a good source of calcium and potassium.

Tchoukball is about harmony and no physical contact, while during the competition some gentlemen manner such as “modesty”, “honesty” and “sincerity” are highly engaged. Syngonium
podophyllum

Nerve Plant

Chamaedorea
     Elegans

China Berry

    Malabar
   Chest nut

  Anthurium Basil Mint

*******************************************************************************

Syngonium podophyllum

Light: Bright light, but no direct sun. Can tolerate low light, but the leaves may lose their variegation. Turn pot regularly for even growth.

Water: Keep the potting mix moist in summer, allowing the surface to dry out before watering again. Water less often in winter, letting the top half of the potting mix dry out.

Humidity: Average room humidity.

Temperature: Normal room temperatures. 60-75°F/16-24°C

Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks from spring through fall with a balanced house plant fertilizer diluted to half the normal strength. In winter, feed monthly.

Nerve Plant

Light: Low to medium light. Avoid direct sunlight. Grows well under fluorescent light.

Water: Keep soil constantly moist, but not soggy. Plant will collapse if it dries out.

Humidity: High humidity (around 70% relative humidity).

Temperature: Average room temperatures 65-75°F/18-24°C

Fertilizer: Feed every 2-3 months spring through fall with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Chamaedorea Elegans

Light: Low light to moderately bright light. If leaves are yellowish-green, it may be getting too much sun.

Water: Keep soil lightly moist. Provide good drainage.

Humidity: Mist the foliage regularly to increase humidity.

Temperature: Normal to warm room temperatures 65-80°F/18-27°C

Fertilizer: Needs more fertilizer than most palms. Feed monthly in spring and summer with slow-release fertilizer.

China Berry (Polyscias)

Light: Aim for bright light, though it will tolerate varying levels from low light to full sun.

Water: Water thoroughly and allow top 2 in (5 cm) of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is a sure way to kill it. Mings have fine roots and are prone to root rot, so when in doubt, keep it on the dry side. Also cut back on water in the winter when growth has slowed.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity. If the air is dry, mist the plant every morning or stand the pot on a tray of wet pebbles.

Temperature: Average room temperatures 65-85°F, 18-29°C. It can take warmer temperatures, but don't expose it to anything below 60°.

Fertilizer: Feed monthly spring through fall with a balanced liquid fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) diluted by half. Young leaves that are yellowish-green are caused by a lack of nutrients.

Malabar Chest nut (Money Tree)

Light: Bright light, but no direct sun. Thrives under fluorescent light.

Water: Money tree plant likes water in big gulps. Water thoroughly, until water comes out the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot, then allow the top 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) to dry out between waterings. Avoid getting water on the trunk, which causes stem rot. Water less in winter.

Humidity: Moderate to high. Try to keep the relative humidity at 50% or higher. Set the pot on a tray of wet pebbles to raise the humidity around it.

Temperature: Average room temperatures 60-75°F/16-24°C;

Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted by half.

Anthurium

Light and temperature: Anthuriums thrive when it is warm during the day (75-85 degrees) and about 10 degrees cooler at night. Higher temperatures will cause the flowers to fade quickly and will slow down growth. Anthuriums are a high light plant; but like most indoor plants will not tolerate direct sun. When there is insufficient light, plant growth slows down and few flowers are produced.

Water: Water an anthurium well and then allow it to dry out before watering again. Under -watering may slow down plant growth, but over-watering will cause permanent root damage. Yellow leaves, when temperatures have not gone below 45 degrees, usually indicates over watering.

Fertilizer: Fertilizing is not as important with an anthurium as it is with other houseplants. Don’t fertilize until you see the plant start to produce new leaves; this may be several months after you have bought it or received it as a gift. When you do fertilize, we recommend diluting it to ½ or ¼ strength. Never fertilize any plant when the soil is totally dry, as this will burn the roots.

Basil

Make sure that the soil is moist. Basil plants like moisture. If you live in a hot area, use mulch around the basil plants (the mulch will help keep the soil moist).

Make sure to pick the leaves regularly to encourage growth throughout the summer.

After 6 weeks, pinch off the center shoot to prevent early flowering. If flowers do grow, just cut them off.

If the weather is going to be cold, be sure to harvest your basil beforehand, as the cold weather will destroy your plants.

Mint

Grow Mint Plants in Containers

Because it grows by underground root runners, mint spreads easily and quickly. To contain it, grow mint in a 12- to 16-inch-wide pot so it can't ramble through your landscape. If you like, tuck the container into the ground so the pot doesn't show but still keeps the herb in check.

You also can plant mint in a large half-barrel or plastic pot and leave it outdoors year-round. Don't keep ceramic pots outdoors during winter; they often crack during the freeze-thaw cycles that follow freezing temperatures.

How to Grow Mint Plants

Plant mint in full sun or part shade. It thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Mint adapts to many soil types, but develops the best foliage in soil that has been enriched with a 2-inch-thick layer of compost.

Frequent cutting keeps mint looking attractive. As with basil and other flowering herbs grown for their leaves, remove flowers as they appear, and pinch back the stems to encourage shorter, bushier growth. Keep the area around mint free of weeds and grass. Otherwise it looks untidy, and the weeds may reduce yields and affect flavor.

<![CDATA[Visiting Ecological Zone at Cotai Strip ]]>53 IFT students, staff and their families visited the Ecological Zone of Cotai Strip on 18 March, to feel and experience the beauty of nature.

IFT has always been emphasising on the health care of students and staff, also the environmental protection of Macao. After the “Green and Healthy Week” which was held at the end of February, IFT once again encouraged students and staff to get close to the nature. The Ecological Zone of Macao is located next to the Cotai landfill area and 4 artificial islands are built inside the zone, where you can find four species of mangrove. Many permanent and migratory birds have chosen this zone as a place of rest or foraging as a result of the wealth of biological diversity and food available there. There are 72 species of plants, 20 species of fish, 11 species of molluscs, 25 species of insects and 13 species of crustaceans. There are a total of 129 species of migratory birds, including some rare species like Platalea Minor. During this visit, participants might gain some valuable experience and know more about the living habits of one of the migratory birds, name as Platalea Minor, which usually stay in Macao in March. This activity also gave a chance for students and staff who are fond of photography to shoot the exquisite scenery, to exchange their knowledge in this area and enhance their friendship with each other.

This activity not only letting students and staff discover the beauty and tranquility of Macao, but also to step out of the classrooms and offices, feeling and enjoying the lovely nature and thus inspiring them for importance of protecting our nature. IFT puts in large effort to promote healthy life style and reinforce students and staffs’ consciousness for environmental protection. IFT hopes to gather this green forces from them, spread this green message to their family and the society, and at the mean time, it also hopes that people can practice this with real action and thus using different ways to show their support for environmental protection and to stay healthy.
